The Dow Jones Industrial Average is valued by averaging the stock prices of 30 listed companies. But you know, the average calculation is not done by adding 30 stock prices and dividing by 30. Mergers, spin-offs, stock splits, and all other developments make simple averaging difficult. As of March 31, 2021, the Dow Jones average was 0.159871, and using this divisor, add the share prices of 30 Dow companies and divide that amount by 0.159871 to calculate the value of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.
A change in the share price of a Dow Jones-listed company equally affects the value of the index, but on a percentage basis, the movements of the highest priced stocks have the highest value, and this has the greatest impact on the value of the index.
To give an example, the company with the maximum share price of the Dow Jones companies as of March 31, 2021 was the share of UnitedHealth Group, which traded at $372.07. and the minimum traded company was Cisco Systems stock at $51.71. UnitedHealth’s stock is 7x while Cisco’s stock is x. It is understood from this that while the value of Dow Jones will change by only 1% in the price of UnitedHealth Group share, the price of Cisco share will need to change by 7.2%.
